We are pleased to announce the sixth Masterclass in International Law taking place at the Max Planck Institute in Heidelberg from 15 to 18 May 2017. It will be led by Professor Joseph Weiler on the topic of “How to Read Decisions of the European Court of Justice”.

Joseph H.H. Weiler, truly a master of European and international law and one of the great intellectual voices of our times, is Joseph Straus Professor of Law, European Union Jean Monnet Chaired Professor and Co-Director, of the Jean Monnet Center for International and Regional Economic Law and Justice at New York University School of Law. He studied law in the United Kingdom and at the European University Institute in Florence, where he later served as professor of law, head of the Department of Law, and most recently as President. In the United States, he served as professor of law at the University of Michigan and as a chaired professor at Harvard Law School. Weiler’s research and teaching focus on international law, the law of the European Union and the WTO, and the interface between religion and law. Among his noted books are The Constitution of Europe, Un Europa Cristiana, and a novella, Der Fall Steinmann.

We are looking forward to exploring the case-law of the European Court of Justice (in particular: Hauer, Melloni, Opinion 2/13, Baumbast; Garcia Avello, Collins, Chen, Zambrano, Bosman) under the guidance of Professor Weiler, and also to discussing aspects across the entire range of his work during those four days. The number of participants is limited in order keep the character of a seminar, and admission of external participants will be based on academic merit and research interests. Please submit your application, including a letter of motivation and a CV, until 6 March 2017, through our online application portal.

During the Masterclass, one afternoon shall be dedicated to presentations from participants. Whoever would be interested in presenting his or her work in that session is invited to indicate so by submitting a short abstract with the application. Professor Weiler has also kindly offered to be available for a limited number of personal consultations.

On Tuesday, 16 May 2017, Professor Weiler will discuss his life and work in a public conversation at DAI Heidelberg (http://www.dai-heidelberg.de), entitled “Integration Through (European) Law - A Life in Scholarship”. Everybody is cordially invited.
